The Business Case for Biodiversity [workshop]
Nature conservation has historically been seen by most businesses as a fluffy ‘nice-to-have’. Interest among businesses in biodiversity is now growing exponentially. Biodiversity is seen not only as a risk to manage, but increasingly as an opportunity for both profit and positive contributions to public goods.
Katherin Pertsinidis, Managing Director of The Biodiversity Consultancy, will give an overview of this space and talk about her experience of scaling up a biodiversity-focused start-up. Tami Putri (Technical Director in Nature Finance) and Graham Prescott (Research Lead) will discuss the application of cutting-edge science and technology to identifying a company’s impact on biodiversity, and transforming it towards positive action.
They will then facilitate a group exercise framed around the following question: 'How would you go about measuring the biodiversity impacts, risks, and opportunities for King's College? How do you think a start-up could serve these needs?'
Katherin Pertsinidis is Managing Director of The Biodiversity Consultancy and is responsible for directing operations and providing strategic guidance to the Consultancy’s board. Katherin is an experienced manager of people and projects. She has significant experience of recruiting, selecting and managing high performing teams. She also brings senior communications experience and expertise to The Biodiversity Consultancy, with a particular focus on making scientific material come alive to non-technicians.
Graham Prescott is an interdisciplinary conservation scientist, with over 10 years of experience solving applied research problems with industry, academic, NGO, and government partners. He has expertise in measuring and understanding biodiversity and has carried out multi-taxon surveys and large-scale field experiments in forest and oil palm landscapes in Borneo and Colombia to test strategies for sustainable palm oil production.
Tami Putri leads our work in applying the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework with commercial banks, asset owners and managers, advancing understanding of nature-related risks and catalysing opportunities from risk management and nature-based solutions. Her work includes designing policies, strategies and systems for managing nature-related risk exposure and creating opportunities. In Impact or natural capital investing, Tami focuses on investment advisory for high-integrity nature-based solutions portfolios particularly on the use of metrics for measuring net positive impacts on nature.
