Upcoming events

Events 23/24

  • Every month of the academic year we dedicate an evening to a discussion about key topic in business, innovation and entrepreneurship. We invite high-caliber speakers to offer their expertise and latest industry knowledge about key topics to our community, combined with a space for questions and discussion.

The “Entrepreneurship Talks” will bring leading founders, investors, scientists, inventors, CEOs and managers of established companies as well as start-ups and many more, facilitating an open space for discussion about topics that shape our society. In the past 2 academic years we have hosted the founders (and co-founder) of ARM, Acorn Computers, Ethereum, Monzo or WPP to King’s. We have also brought C-suite executives from leading manufacturing (e.g. Rolls Royce), finance (banking, insurance and fintech – Monzo, Lloyds…) or consulting (e.g. BCG) and shared economy (e.g. Uber) companies as well as leading investors (angel, VC and PE) and winners of Oscars (Academy Awards), combined with an array of interdisciplinary academics including an annual lecture by a Nobel laureate in Economics (delivered by Oliver Hart in 21/22 and Joseph Stiglitz in 22/23).

You can watch recordings of some of the talks here.

  • Events are open to everyone and tickets are free (unless stated otherwise). We invite you to register to our newsletter for priority access.

We aim for most events to be hybrid (both in-person and virtual), making them accessible to alumni and friends of the College across the globe.

For those coming in person the evening also includes a wine reception with members of the Lab, King’s and JBS students (from undergrads to postdocs) and its Advisory Board and members and friends of the College, providing an informal and welcoming space to meet like-minded individuals.

Atmosphere, Ethics, and Public Demand: Book Talk & Roundtable

Atmosphere, Ethics, and Public Demand: Book Talk & Roundtable

Join us to celebrate the book launch of Moral Atmospheres: Islam and Media in a Pakistani Marketplace, (Timothy P.A. Cooper, 2024), winner of the 2022 Claremont Prize for the Study of Religion, awarded by the Institute for Religion, Culture, and Public Life at Columbia University to support and promote cutting-edge scholarship by early career researchers.

Lahore’s Hall Road is the largest electronics market in Pakistan. Once the center of film and media piracy in South Asia, it now specializes in smartphones and accessories. For Hall Road’s traders, conflicts between the economic promises and the moral dangers of film loom large. To reconcile their secular trade with their responsibilities as devoted Muslims, they often look to adjudicate the good or bad moral “atmosphere” (mahaul) that can cling to film and media. Moral Atmospheres examines the diverse and coexisting moral atmospheres that surround media in Pakistan, tracing public understandings of ethical life and showing how they influence economic behavior. At once a vivid ethnography of a market street and a generative theorization of atmosphere, this book offers fresh perspectives on moral experience and the relationship between religion and media.

More information can be found here.

Timothy Cooper will be joined by Mike Degani, Garima Jaju, and Naveeda Khan (Online). The event will be chaired by Christina Woolner.

Private screening of My Extinction followed by Q&A with Director Josh Appignanesi

Private screening of My Extinction followed by Q&A with Director Josh Appignanesi

What does it take for us to act on the climate crisis - especially if we're the kind of person who should already be acting? In this funny, relatable documentary feature, a concerned yet ineffectual dad finds the first step is letting those unbearable feelings of climate anxiety in, instead of pushing them aside. But as he meets others like him, he discovers how oil-backed propagandists funded our denial and paralysis. They set out to unmask the vested interests responsible, helping raise a generation's leading voices in vibrant chorus at the game-changing Tufton Street protest, including Zadie Smith, Mark Rylance, and George Monbiot. Selected to screen to delegates at the COP28 Climate Conference in Dubai, My Extinction is a revealingly honest account of how to feel your feelings, act on your privilege, and get active when threatened with extinction. You can watch the trailer here.

He also co-wrote US rom-com ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME starring Sarah Jessica Parker.

Most recently, climate documentary MY EXTINCTION (2023) released in over 60 UK cinemas and screened at COP28. He is pursuing future projects in the climate space.

ACCLAIM FOR MY EXTINCTION

“Skewers middle-class attitudes to impending apocalypse” – Catherine Bray, THE GUARDIAN

"Jaunty, funny film-making" - Peter Bradshaw, THE GUARDIAN

''Reminds us working together is empowering'' - Susie Orbach, THE OBSERVER

“My Extinction is about the limits of language to address imminent catastrophe, but also the necessity of finding words to describe what’s happening, to tell stories that will convince and move and make a difference.” Lauren Elkin, ARTFORUM

“If you feel you should be doing more to limit climate change but never seem to get round to it, this British documentary will speak to you” - Ed Potton, SUNDAY TIMES

“… confronts the imperfect nature of being a climate activist” - Henry Bird, TIMES ENVIRONMENT NEWSLETTER

“An excellent look into the step-by-step process of realising and understanding climate change and its impact on everyday people” - Mae Trumata, THE UPCOMING

“Is Josh Appignanesi transforming into the next great documentarian? My Extinction reads like the opening chapters of an unfinished novel from an intellectual-turned-radical: heavy sociopolitical context, rich character development and instructions for the path forward. Essential viewing.” Quinn Hough, VAGUE VISAGES

Gen-AI: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work

Marina M. Tavares is visiting us from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and will present her joint work on Gen-AI: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to reshape the global economy, especially in the realm of labor markets. Advanced economies will experience the benefits and pitfalls of AI sooner than emerging markets and developing economies, largely due to their employment structure focused on cognitive-intensive roles. There are some consistent patterns concerning AI exposure, with women and college-educated individuals more exposed but also better poised to reap AI benefits, and older workers potentially less able to adapt to the new technology. Labor income inequality may increase if the complementarity between AI and high-income workers is strong, while capital returns will increase wealth inequality. However, if productivity gains are sufficiently large, income levels could surge for most workers. In this evolving landscape, advanced economies and more developed emerging markets need to focus on upgrading regulatory frameworks and supporting labor reallocation, while safeguarding those adversely affected. Emerging market and developing

Can Green Innovation Stimulate Economies and Curb Emissions?

Zeina Hasna is visiting us from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and will present her joint work on green innovation. The discussion will draw on a few background working papers analyzing the economic impact of green innovation at the macro-and micro-levels, and the role of environmental policies in boosting green innovation and diffusion.

Innovation in low-carbon technologies (LCTs), which is essential in the fight against climate change, has slowed in recent years. Zeina will draw on work from the IMF to show that a global climate policy strategy can bolster innovation in, and deployment of, LCTs. Countries that expand their climate policy portfolio exhibit higher (1) climate-change-mitigation-patent filings, (2) LCT trade flows, and (3) “green” foreign direct investment flows. Importantly, boosting innovation in, and deployment of, LCTs yields medium-term growth, which mitigates potential costs from climate policies. Based on this work, she and colleagues at the IMF stresses the importance of international policy coordination and cooperation by showcasing evidence of potential climate policy spillovers.

PAST EVENT: Sound and Social Worlds: “feeling” the climate in organisations

Sound and Social Worlds: “feeling” the climate in organisations

Join us to celebrate the book launch of “Sound, Order and Survival in Prison”. The book reflects on a year working with the community at a local men’s prison: HMP Midtown, exploring the soundscape and its role in social life. Sound was a barometer for the emotional climate on the wing, a means of forecasting trouble and keeping safe. In this most particular of environments, where so much of life is conducted out of view, the soundscape was central to processes of order and its disruptions, to how time was passed, and industry sought. Privileging the auditory led to theorising about the prison anew, but also holds potential for transferring these methods to other spaces. What does analysing rhythms of human behaviour in particular spaces tell us about how we can enhance health and wellbeing for those within them?

Kate Herrity will be joined by Gillian Tett (Provost of King's, author and journalist) and Anna Raverat (Kings alumna and organisation development practitioner).

About the speakers

Kate Herrity is the Mellon-Kings Research Fellow in Punishment. She has particular interests in music, sound and the sensory in places of punishment and social control (see previous publication here), and in worrying at the meeting places between criminology and other fields and disciplines.

Anna Raverat (King's alumna 1988-1991, English) is an organisation development practitioner with 25 years experience working in organisations of all shapes and sizes. She spent a year working in a high security men's prison and found the presenting issues to be similar to her other clients.

Gillian Tett is the Provost of Kings and was a chair of the editorial board and editor-at-large, US of the Financial Times. She writes weekly columns, covering a range of economic, financial, political and social issues and co-founded Moral Money, the FT sustainability newsletter.

The book will be available to purchase at a discount at the event, with more information available here.

Our events

Every month of the academic year we dedicate an evening to a discussion about key topic in business, innovation and entrepreneurship.

In the past 2 academic years we have hosted the founders (and co-founders) of ARM, Acorn Computers, Ethereum, Monzo or WPP to King’s. We have also brought C-suite executives from leading manufacturing (e.g. Rolls Royce), finance (banking, insurance and fintech like Monzo or Lloyds amongst others) or consulting (e.g. BCG) and shared economy (e.g. Uber) companies as well as leading investors (angel, VC and PE), combined with an array of interdisciplinary academics including an annual lecture by a Nobel laureate in Economics (delivered by Oliver Hart in 21/22 and Joseph Stiglitz in 22/23).

We aim for most events to be hybrid (both in-person and virtual), making them accessible to alumni and friends of the College across the globe. For those coming in person the evening also includes a drinks reception with members of the Lab and its Advisory Board and members and friends of the College, providing an informal and welcoming space to meet like-minded individuals. Events are open to everyone and tickets are free (unless stated otherwise).
