Current E-Lab Research Associates

  • Nadia Mohd-Radzman

I am passionate about improving food security by translating plant biotechnology research to the field. I have co-founded an early-stage biotechnology startup that is developing a new technology to open up the bottleneck of plant gene-editing for better and improved crops. This was covered as one of the case studies by IE Cambridge on their website. Apart from my entrepreneurial and research work, I am also an active steering committee member of Cambridge Global Food Security (GFS) that is involved in developing programmes and events as platforms for interdisciplinary dialogues and collaborations between different departments across University of Cambridge to solve food security issues.

  • Coco Newton

Coco is a 2023 Schmidt Science Fellow based between University of Cambridge, University College London and Delft Technical University in the Netherlands. Her work focuses on advocacy for transformative change in dementia healthcare systems, combining neuroscience with health systems design and engineering to translate new technologies for earlier disease detection and dementia prevention.

  • Ismail Sami

I am a materials scientist and Research Fellow at the Faraday Institution, based in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. I am also the CEO and co-founder of MoSTLi; delivering the next generation energy storage solution to help us get towards net-zero.

I completed my MPhys in Theoretical Physics at the University of Manchester, with a year abroad at the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating with a MRes in Engineering at the University of Cambridge, I continued to gain a PhD in developing novel materials for energy storage.

E-Lab Research Associate Competition

The King’s Entrepreneurship Lab makes up to three appointments to E-Lab Research Associates each year in any subject (arts, humanities, sciences, engineering).

Appointments are for two years. Applicants must, at the time of appointment, have funding for at least a full year. The E-Lab RA scheme is designed to run in parallel to an existing research contract at the University of Cambridge. Under this scheme, postdoctoral researchers are bought out for one day of their week which they devote to entrepreneurial activities in the broad sense of the term (which could be related to their current research or be something completely different). This could focus on a range of varied activities including among others commercialisation of intellectual property, cultural production, charity and social initiatives.

Applicants must submit a plan for their activities as an E-Lab RA together with a supporting email/letter from their PI (if applicable).

E-Lab Research Associates have access to the Turing Rooms (the home of the E-Lab at King’s), the SCR, the Library and other College facilities. They have the right to lunch and dine in College with one High Table dinner and two lunches per week free of charge. Presentation of their work to the E-Lab Senior Advisory Board, the Fellowship and Graduate student body will be expected of all Research Associates at some point during their tenure. They will also be expected to report on their entrepreneurial activities at the end of each academic term.
